What This Service Includes
Woodwork throughout your home — doors, skirting boards, architraves, staircases, handrails, window sills, picture rails and dado rails — takes constant wear and suffers from knocks, scuffs, chipping and general deterioration over time. Properly restored and refinished woodwork transforms the character of a room, sharpens the entire interior and protects the timber for years to come.
This service is for homeowners who want their existing timber features restored rather than replaced. Whether you have Victorian panel doors with layers of old paint, a stripped pine staircase that needs refinishing, skirting boards covered in chips and dents, or original period features that deserve proper restoration, we have the skills, tools and experience to bring them back.
Woodwork restoration is a methodical, labour-intensive process. There are no shortcuts — each surface must be stripped to bare timber (if changing from paint to natural finish), filled, sanded through multiple grades, primed and painted or stained and varnished. The quality of the preparation determines the quality and longevity of the finished result.
We work with all interior timber — softwood and hardwood, painted and natural finish, modern and period. Our refinishing options include gloss, satin and eggshell paint, natural oil, Danish oil, beeswax, water-based and solvent-based varnish, wood stain, and specialist heritage finishes for listed properties.
Examples of Our Work

What Happens When You Wait Too Long
Deteriorating woodwork affects both the appearance and the functionality of your interior. Left unaddressed, what starts as cosmetic damage progresses into problems that are significantly more expensive to rectify.
Paint Build-Up Obscures Detail
Period properties often have doors, architraves and coving with multiple layers of paint that fill and obscure original moulding detail. Each repaint without proper preparation adds thickness that softens profiles and hides the craftsmanship of the original timber.
Moisture Damage to Window Sills
Interior window sills and frames are vulnerable to condensation damage. Peeling, cracking paint exposes bare timber to moisture, leading to softening, discolouration and eventually rot that requires timber replacement rather than refinishing.
Staircase Safety Issues
Worn, splintered or poorly maintained staircase components — treads, spindles, handrails and newel posts — are not just unsightly. They can become safety hazards, particularly for children and elderly family members.
Inconsistent Finishes Throughout
Over years of piecemeal touch-ups, woodwork throughout a property accumulates different sheen levels, colour variations and finish qualities. This patchwork effect makes the entire interior feel neglected regardless of how clean and tidy the property is.
Our Proven Process
Assessment and Specification
We examine every piece of woodwork, identify repairs needed, assess existing finishes, and discuss your preferred look — painted, natural, stained or varnished. A detailed specification and quote are provided.
Stripping and Cleaning
Where necessary, we chemically strip or heat-strip old paint and varnish back to bare timber. For painted woodwork remaining painted, we sand existing finishes and remove flaking material.
Repair and Filling
We repair damaged timber — replacing rotten sections, splicing in new timber where needed, filling dents, holes and imperfections with appropriate wood filler, and sanding through progressively finer grades until surfaces are smooth.
Priming and Sealing
Bare timber is primed with appropriate wood primer. For natural finishes, timber is sealed with sanding sealer to even out absorption. Knots are sealed to prevent resin bleed.
Finish Application
Two to three coats of the specified finish are applied — gloss, satin, eggshell, varnish, oil or wax depending on your choice. Each coat is lightly sanded between applications to build a perfectly smooth, durable surface.
The Results You Can Expect
Preserves Original Features
Restoration keeps your original timber features intact rather than replacing them with modern reproductions. In period properties, original woodwork adds character and value that cannot be replicated.
Consistent Finish Throughout
Restoring all woodwork in one project ensures a uniform colour, sheen and quality throughout your home. No more mismatched touch-ups or inconsistent finishes from room to room.
Long-Lasting Protection
Properly prepared and finished woodwork lasts 8 to 10 years before needing attention again. This durability comes from thorough preparation, not expensive products.
Reveals Hidden Detail
Stripping layers of paint from period doors, architraves and skirting reveals the original moulding profiles and timber quality beneath. Many homeowners are delighted by the detail hidden under decades of paint.
Cost-Effective vs Replacement
Restoring existing woodwork costs a fraction of replacing it, especially for period-style timber that is expensive to replicate. Restoration preserves both your budget and your home's character.
Improved Property Value
Well-maintained or professionally restored woodwork is a significant selling point. It signals a property that has been cared for and maintained to a high standard.
Door Restoration
We restore all types of internal doors — Victorian four-panel, Edwardian glazed, 1930s plank doors, and modern flush doors. Services include stripping, sanding, glass bead replacement, hinge repair, draught-proofing, and full refinishing in paint, stain or clear finish. We can also upgrade plain flush doors with applied mouldings to create a panelled appearance at a fraction of the cost of new doors.
Staircase Refinishing
Staircase restoration covers all components — treads, risers, strings, newel posts, spindles (both square and turned), handrails and caps. We sand treads to remove old finish and stains, repair damaged spindles, tighten loose components, and refinish the entire staircase. For a modern look, many clients choose to stain treads in a dark shade while painting risers and spindles in a contrasting colour.
Skirting and Architrave Restoration
Skirting boards and architraves accumulate damage from vacuuming, furniture placement and foot traffic. We fill all dents and chips, sand smooth, and apply multiple coats of hardwearing paint. Where skirting or architraves are beyond restoration, we replace damaged sections with matching profiles, ensuring seamless joins that are invisible once painted.
Natural Wood Finishes
For clients who prefer the warmth of natural timber, we offer multiple finishing options. Danish oil provides a low-sheen, natural appearance that enhances wood grain. Hard wax oil combines the look of oil with increased durability. Water-based varnish offers protection with minimal yellowing over time. Solvent-based varnish provides the deepest, richest finish but darkens naturally with age. We advise on the best option based on timber species, room usage and your aesthetic preferences.
